ABOUT

Last fall, the convergence of several culmination events led to loading up my remaining possessions into a recycled Subaru Outback and hitting the road for a while, dirtbag style.

Some time ago, I realized that when certain concepts emerge into reality, the opposite also magically instantiates. For instance, say right, and there's a left. Say good, and there's bad. With endings, there's also a beginning, so rather than waiting for spring to come to me, I set out searching for it.

It's the next chapter in the movie Roadtrip to Earth, and decided this time to also write about it. It's mostly for myself as the reflection during writing is sometimes more interesting than when you're in the midst of the action. It's also for friends who see me as a bit batty, and for folks who crossed my path along the way.

Ditched the Moleskine metro-poet archetype and checked out how the net has evolved and what tools were suitable in the year 2016 A.D. for this project. For starters, settled upon using SquareSpace to build a web presence focused around documenting the journey. Managed to endure the slog through mind numbing digital mud setting up DNS entries and mmx records and such, and finally the site is alive.

A blog isn't the best way to do this. I know that. Can't easily display blog entries from the start to end so it can read like a book. Nor can I easily put up a thumb view so folks can randomly access posts based on the photo. Nor can I easily spawn off related threads as they emerge. Facebook et al fragments the story to bits, so unfortunately, folks will have to poll and pull to to engage with the blog in this otherwise modern push world.

Still, it's the best setup I can manage myself, have it functioning while in a perpetual state of work-in-progress, and get on with the fun part of doing instead of managing consultants to do this or that. Writing and posting on the fly from the phone is a mandatory requirement as I don't want homework when I find a desk somewhere, have to crack open the laptop and then have to remember what to write and post. That's unnecessary stress. Can't imagine telling stories without pictures in this day and age, so that too is a must. So, Jiro, a little photo capture, edit and management app I made in the last chapter will be my faithful sidekick for posting direct to here from anywhere on the planet, on or off the net.

It's a journey that starts in the mountains, more or less at the headwaters of the watershed for the western United States. From there it's all downhill, and where it'll go who knows. They say the journey is the reward, so just gonna write and post as it flows. It starts by revisiting the cult of golf I'd defected from some 30 years ago, and like the water flowing in the creek near my mountain hut, how it gets anywhere nobody knows, but one thing for sure is that it too eventually finds its way to the sea, knowingly or not.

Time to dive into the rabbit hole. See you on the other side. First blog post is here.

Media content in the blog sourced from me (mostly) or Google Images. Submit DCMA notices and they'll be attended to. Thanks.
